Weekly Food Waste Roll Out

Torfaen CBC - Communications Grant Case Study

The project involved the development and distribution of a food waste information pack to accompany a new 23Ltr Brown Food Caddy direct to all 38, 602 households across the Borough to inform residents that Torfaen County Borough Council intended to introduce a weekly food waste collection service, which commenced on 22nd October 2013. In order to measure the impact of this communications initiative, a participation survey was conducted seven months after the launch in order to obtain a measure of householder’s use of the new service compared with participation numbers of the original scheme prior to its introduction. Previously, Torfaen County Borough Council had operated an alternative weekly collection where residents were required to place both food and green waste in their Green Wheelie Bins. Recycling rates and tonnages were also measured before and after the launch.
