Welsh Patient Referral Service (WPRS)

In Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (CVUHB) all specialties were experiencing a yearly increase in GP referrals into secondary care. All GP Practices have access to the Welsh Clinical Communications Gateway, however multiple methods of referral were used resulting in duplicate referrals and concerns about governance . CVUHB is rolling out the Welsh Patient Referral Service (WPRS) which delivers a single electronic route for GP referrals to be prioritised within secondary care. The system also provides two way communication between primary and secondary care, all contained within a secure auditable system. The preliminary results of an audit in Cardiology since the pilot started have seen 11% of referrals being returned to a GP with advice to support the care of the patient in primary care when an Outpatient appointment was not required. WPRS can be tailored to each specialty and provides a platform to facilitate review of process and make changes as required.
