Background

In 2015 Wales Audit Office (WAO) undertook a programme of work into NHS Waiting Times in Wales. WAO indicated that it is unlikely that NHS Wales could achieve and sustain low waiting times if it tries to do more of what it has done in the past. Recommendations for NHS organisations included sharing of existing good practice and new service improvements.

In February 2016, Welsh Government launched Prudent Healthcare: Securing Health and Wellbeing for Future Generations which set out the need for transforming outpatient services in Wales.

A workshop was held in June 2016, where staff came together from across Wales to agree the way forward for improving their local outpatients service. Additionally, the workshop provided the mandate for the strands of work that now make up the ‘1000 Lives Improvement Outpatient Programme’.  More information about this work can be found here .
