Maggie’s cancer caring centre, Swansea

Seeing is Believing - Co-production Case Studies from Wales

Maggie’s offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends. Built in the grounds of specialist NHS cancer hospitals, the Centres are social rather than medical spaces, designed to be warm, informal and welcoming. Professionals are on hand to offer a programme of support that has been shown to improve physical and emotional well-being, developed to compliment medical treatment. The programme includes clinical psychology, nutrition, benefits advice and physical activity. Those who attend the Centre also provide on-going support and advice to each other and work with staff to co-design and co-deliver this holistic service. There are currently eighteen Maggie’s Centres in operation, each receiving up to 100 visits a day. Maggie’s Swansea is the first in Wales.
